Anti-dsDNA

Antibodies to double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) are often detected in patients with SLE. The presence of anti-dsDNA antibodies is one of the criteria used by the American College of Rheumatology to classify SLE.

ANA ELISA
Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are a group of autoantibodies that bind to various cell nuclear antigens.  The detection of ANA is useful in screening for rheumatic diseases, including Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD), Sjogren’s Syndrome (SS) and Progressive Systemic Sclerosis (PSS).

Anti-SS-A (Ro)
SS-A antibodies are found in patients with SLE, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Sjogren’s Syndrome.  These antibodies have also been found in patients with Systemic Sclerosis and Neonatal Lupus Erythematosus.

Anti-SS-B (La)
SS-B antibodies are found in patients with SLE, RA and Sjogren’s Syndrome. These antibodies have also been found in patients with Systemic Sclerosis and Neonatal Lupus Erythematosus.  Antibodies to SS-B rarely occur in the absence of anti-SS-A antibodies. The risk of nephritis is higher in patients with SS-A antibodies in the absence of SS-B antibodies.

Anti-Sm
Sm antibodies are highly specific markers for SLE and may be found in up to 30% of SLE patients. They are commonly associated with nephritis and in severe cases with central nervous system involvement.

Anti-RNP
RNP antibodies may be found in up to 50% of SLE patients and in up to 95% of patients with MCTD. High levels of antibodies to the Sm/RNP complex, in the absence of anti-Sm antibodies are typical of MCTD.

Anti-Scl-70
Scl-70 antibodies have been clinically associated with Scleroderma (with a prevalence of up to 40%) and PSS (with a prevalence of 20-30%). They are rarely found in other rheumatic diseases.

Anti-Jo-1
This antibody was found in 20-30% patients with Polymyositis/Dermatomyositis (PM/DM) and in 30-40% of patients with PM, particularly in more than 60% of patients with PM combined with interstitial lung disease and is rarely found in other collagen diseases.

Anti-Centromere
These have been detected in between 49% and 96% of CREST syndrome patients, with particular association with Raynaud’s phenomenon. They have also been reported in a number of cases of primary biliary cirrhosis in association with scleroderma.

Anti-Mitochondria
The detection of these antibodies is very useful for the diagnosis of hepatic disease, in particular, 95% of biopsy-proven cases of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).
