diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus and is
not definitive in isolation. Antinuclear
antibody detection represents one parameter in a
multi-criteria diagnostic process. Sm
antibodies are highly specific markers for SLE
and may be found in up to 30% of SLE patients.
They are commonly associated with nephritis and
in severe cases with central nervous system
involvement.

RNP antibodies may be found in up
to 50% of SLE patients and in up to 95% of
patients with MCTD. High levels of antibodies to
the Sm/RNP complex, in the absence of anti-Sm
antibodies are typical of MCTD.
